Khal Mohammedi rugs are hand made by the Turkmens in the northern part of Afghanistan. Most of the Khal Mohammedi rugs are woven in the town of Kunduz. The Khal Mohammedi design is hand knotted with wool on cotton. This type of rug design has been around for many many years and still continues to be popular in current trends. The primary colour is dark red/burgundy with blue. The natural red dye in this type of rugs comes from the Madder root and the blue from Indigofera tinctoria. As the colours in Khal Mohammedi are usually darker they can be quite forgiving and furnishable in all sorts of decor.
